Volunteer Opportunities

4-H Club Leader (for children in grades 4-12)

Organize 5 or more children and help them plan educational activities around an area of interest. This could be a type of animal, mechanical science, physical or environmental science, art, hobby, or community service, such as dogs, rabbits, model trains, astronomy, dance, knitting or pet therapy. The time commitment is decided by the individual leader and club. Most clubs have a business meeting once a month and an educational, recreational or community service meeting once a month. 4-H requires that each prospective leader complete an application, give references and attend an orientation. 4-H Prep Club Advisor/Leader (for children in grades 1-3)

Prep is for children to explore a wide variety of subjects and activities. The job of the advisor is to organize 5 or more children and their families and help them plan activities around their individual area of interest. Subjects may include animals, cooking, science, performing arts, nature or crafts. The time commitment is decided by the families involved. Most clubs have an educational, recreational or community service meeting or trip twice a month. 4-H requires that each prospective advisor complete an application, give references and attend an orientation. 4-H Club Resource Advisor (animals, arts or sciences)

4-H promotes learning by doing and provides hands-on learning opportunities. Adults are needed with expertise in a science, art or hobby and a willingness to share that knowledge with children and teens. The 4-H office will connect resource volunteers with the appropriate clubs. 4-H requires that each prospective volunteer complete an application, give references and attend an orientation. 4-H Volunteer Dog Trainers

There are over 50 young people and their dogs involved in 4-H Dog Clubs. Experienced trainers are needed to help them prepare for showmanship, obedience or agility. 4-H requires that each prospective volunteer complete an application, give references and attend an orientation. 4-H Fair Volunteers

         Electricians Helpers: Adults and teens are needed to assist electricians in the wiring of tents. No experience or license required. Unrolling wires, zip tying them to the tent and replacing light bulbs are completed the week before the Fair; dismantling the Saturday after the Fair. This may involve climbing a step ladder. Training and supervision provided by licensed electricians.

         General Set-Up: Adult and teen volunteers are needed to set up tables and board and block benches in the food tent, hang banners and signs, etc.

         Food Tent Helpers: Adult and teen volunteers are needed to serve the public in the Pie & Cake, Cotton Candy and Milkshake booths. Training is provided. Two hour shifts are scheduled.

         General Clean-Up: Adults and teens are needed to help take down, roll and label wiring.

4-H Treasury Auditors (January)

There are over 70 4-H Clubs in Somerset County and they are required to have their treasuries audited. Adults, with bookkeeping experience, are needed each January to look over their books and sign that they are correct. Contact County 4-H Agents at somersetcounty4h@co.somerset.nj.us

4-H Family Camp Weekend Kitchen Crew (June)

Each year 4-H families visit the residential 4-H Camp in Stokes State Forest, NJ. Help is needed planning, shopping, cooking and serving meals for about 100 people for the weekend. Contact 4-H Prep Coordinator at somersetcounty4h@co.somerset.nj.us

4-H Wreath Bow Makers (November)

Each year Somerset County 4-H members sell over 2,500 wreaths. Decorated wreaths are sold with a cheerful red plastic bow. Materials may be picked up at the 4-H Center in November. 4-H Presentation Judges (March/April)

Each year about 150 individual 4-H members prepare a demonstration, illustrated talk, speech or performance to be critiqued by a team of two judges. This 3-day event is held the end of March or beginning of April. Judges need only attend one evening or afternoon session, critiquing 4 - 6 presentations. Training is provided. 4-H Teaching Opportunities

School Enrichment Classes, Science-Sational Day, 4-H Prep Rally, 4-H Day Camps offer opportunities to teach; usually 30-40 minute classes on the subject of your choice. Suggestions for topics in science, performing arts, creative arts, nutrition and wellness are welcome. Some experience with youth required. 4-H Volunteer Sewing Teachers

4-H members need adults to teach them to sew, by hand or machine. Experience with youth and in sewing necessary. 4-H requires that each prospective volunteer complete an application, give references and attend an orientation. County 4-H Leadership Opportunities
Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of activities such as:

  • Planning the annual 4-H Fair and other special events
  • Marketing, promotion, recruitment
  • Involving youth in community service
  • producing the annual Yearbook and Catalog
  • Soliciting donations and sponsorships
  • Locating and organizing 4-H Alumni
  • Organizing fundraisers
